Understanding Knee and Ankle Problems

Understanding Knee and Ankle Problems: Adopting a Naturopathic Approach

I wish you all the best, Dr. I am Somiran Ghosal, a naturopath studying outside Calcutta. In today’s lecture, we will discuss the common problems of the knee and ankle and examine naturopathic approaches to effectively treat this condition.

Introduction

Knee and ankle problems are prevalent, and if you visit any orthopedic clinic, you will see that a significant number of cases involve these joint problems. Orthopedic hospitals often suggest knee replacement or fixation of the ankle joint as the standard treatment. They can provide crutches and other assistive devices, but I want to emphasize that naturopathy provides a wonderful way to treat these problems.

I am treating knee problems in patients between 30 and 91 years of age. One of my most recent patients, a 91-year-old, came to my clinic with metal parts tied to his knees and a crutch in his hand. After undergoing naturopathic treatment, he left my clinic walking without a crutch. I assured them that if they follow the prescribed procedure, they will not need any assistive devices and they will be able to move freely.

The Power of Naturopathy

Naturopathy focuses on understanding the root cause of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms. It is important to understand that 80 percent of the healing process comes from the patient’s desire to be better and follow the guidance of the naturopath, while the remaining 20 percent of the procedure is the effectiveness of the naturopathic treatment.

Key points of naturopathic treatment for knee and ankle problems

  1. Holistic Understanding: Always try to fully understand the problem. By understanding the body’s natural mechanisms and the underlying problems that cause pain, you can formulate more effective treatment plans.
  2. Individual treatment: Each patient’s condition is unique. Instead of relying on standard medication for knee or ankle pain, adapt treatment to the specific needs of the person.
  3. Patient Education: Educate your patients about their condition When patients understand their problems and natural ways of solving them, they are more confident and proactive in their treatment.
  4. Lifestyle changes: Encourage patients to make necessary lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise, and stress management, which play an important role in the healing process.
  5. Natural Remedies: Using natural therapies such as hydrotherapy, herbal medicine, acupuncture and physical therapy. These methods support the body’s natural healing processes and help restore joint function.

To understand common ankle problems and naturopathic approaches

In this article we will talk about various common ankle problems, its symptoms and the potential benefits of naturopathic treatment. As a practising naturopath, I am dr. Somiran Ghosal has treated numerous patients with ankle problems, which has helped them get relief and improve their mobility through natural methods.

Common ankle problems

Hill Spur

Definition: Heel spur is the growth of bones on the lower side of the eddy bone.

Icons:

  • There is pain in the eddy, especially while walking or standing.
  • A bone-like protrusion below the bone of the eddy that causes contractions and discomfort during movement.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Description: Heel spurs occur when calcium is deposited on the lower side of the eddy bone. This can lead to severe pain that appears to have been pierced at the bottom of the foot while getting up in the morning or after a period of inactivity

Ankle instability

Definition: Ankle instability refers to weakness in the muscles surrounding the ligament or ankle joint.

Icons:

  • There are frequent ankle bumps.
  • Feel restless or lack of confidence in putting pressure on the feet.
  • Pain caused by touching weak muscles and bones or other related problems.

Description: Ankle instability is often caused by previous injuries, such as a concussion, which have not healed properly. It can cause the ankle to give way frequently, which leads to more injuries and prolonged discomfort.

Ankle arthritis

Definition: Knee arthritis leads to degeneration of cartilage in the knee joint of the foot.

Icons:

  • Joint pain, swelling and stiffness in the ankle.
  • Limited range of motion due to swelling and pain.

Description: Arthritis in the knee is becoming more and more common and can be exacerbated by poor dietary habits. This condition leads to a breakdown of the cartilage, causing the bones to rub together, resulting in pain and limited movement.

Machcode

Definition: A concussion is a stretch or rupture of a ligament that supports the ankle joint of the foot.

Icons:

  • Pain, swelling and bruising.
  • It is difficult to bear the weight and walk, which often results in lameness.

Description: A fracture in the ankle occurs when the foot moves, pulls or ruptures beyond its normal range of motion. This injury is common in children and athletes but can happen to anyone.

Bunyan

Definition: A bunion is a bone bump formed on the joint at the bottom of the large toe.

Icons:

  • Pain, redness, and swelling around the large joint of the thumb.
  • Difficulty walking due to misunderstanding of toe.                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Description: The boolean develops when the larger toe is pushed to the side toe, causing the joint to protrude and enlarge. This can result from arthritis or other inflammatory conditions and often lead to significant discomfort and mobility issues.

Naturopathic approaches to ankle problems

Naturopathic medicine focuses on treating the root cause of diseases through natural methods, lifestyle changes and treatment as a whole. Here are some naturopathic approaches to the management of ankle problems:

  1. Diet and Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory diet can help reduce the symptoms of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins can support joint health.
  2. Physical Therapy: Regular exercise and stretching routine strengthen the muscles and ligaments around the ankle, which improves stability and reduces the risk of stuttering and instability.
  3. Herbal remedies: Herbal supplements like turmeric, ginger and boswellia have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help control pain and swelling.
  4. Hydrotherapy: An alternating hot and cold water bath improves circulation and can reduce inflammation in the affected area.
  5. Acupuncture: This traditional Chinese medicine technique can help relieve pain and improve joint function by stimulating specific points on the body.
  6. Massage Therapy: Regular massage improves blood flow, reduces muscle tension and relaxes, which helps in the process of bleeding.

Understanding knee problems and naturopathic approaches

Knee problems are common and can significantly affect a person’s mobility and quality of life. In this article we will give information about the common problems of the knee, its causes, and how the treatment of naturopaths can provide effective remedies. I am Dr. Somiran Ghosal is practising a Kolkata based naturopath and I have helped many patients get relief from knee problem through natural methods.

Common knee problems

  1. Injury

Definition: Knee injuries can occur for a variety of reasons, such as wrong feet, being overweight, jumping or descending a ladder.

Reasons:

  • Wrong foot: Improper placement of the foot while walking or running can injure the knee.
  • Excess weight: Too much weight puts extra stress on the knee joints.
  • Jumping or descending stairs: These activities can cause sudden pressure on the knee, which can lead to injuries.

Description: The knee joint is a complex structure composed of muscles, tendons, cartilage, and ligaments. When any of these components bend or rupture due to injury, it can result in knee pain and discomfort.

2. Strained or torn ligaments or muscles

Definition: Strained or torn ligaments or muscles around the knee are common injuries that can result from sudden movement or overuse.

Reasons:

  • Injury: Sudden effects or strange movements can cause tension or rupture of the ligaments and muscles.
  • Overuse : Repetitive stress on the knee joints from activities such as running or jumping can lead to stress and tears.

Description: Tension and tears in the ligaments or muscles are often painful and can significantly limit knee function. These injuries are usually caused by a combination of factors such as improper movements, excessive stress or accidents.

Naturopathic approaches to knee problems

Naturopathy provides a complete and natural treatment for knee problems, focusing on understanding the root cause of the problem and promoting the body’s natural healing process.

Main Naturopathic Treatments

  1. Diet and Nutrition : A balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory diet can help reduce knee pain and inflammation. The inclusion of a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and essential vitamins can support joint health and repair damaged tissues.

  6. Massage Therapy: Regular massage improves blood flow, reduces muscle tension and relaxes. It helps in the healing process by removing pain and stiffness in the knee joints.

Diagnostic tests for knee and ankle problems

  • To understand and diagnose knee and ankle problems, a comprehensive approach is needed to identify the underlying causes and to develop an effective treatment plan. This article will explore the various diagnostic tests used to evaluate these issues, highlighting the importance of a thorough assessment before starting any treatment. Practising a Naturopathic Doctor based in Calcutta, I was a doctor. Somiran Ghosal emphasizes the importance of understanding the root causes of the combined problem in order to provide effective and holistic treatment.

Common diagnostic tests

Imaging Checks

  1. X-Ray
  • Purpose: To visualize the bone structure and detect any abnormalities such as fractures, bone spurs or arthritis.

Usage: Is essential for the diagnosis of structural problems in the knees and ankle

2. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

  • Purpose: Provide detailed images of soft tissues including ligaments, tendons and cartilage.
  • Usage: Important for identifying soft tissue injuries such as ligament tears or cartilage damage.

 3. CT scan (computed tomography)

  • Purpose: Gives a more detailed view of the bones and soft tissues.
  • Usage: Useful for the diagnosis of complex fractures and other complex structural problems.

 Physical examinations

  • Purpose: To evaluate the range of movement, swelling and pain in the knee and ankle.
  • Usage: Helps to determine the initial severity of the problem and identify areas of tenderness or instability.

Blood tests

  1. CRP (C-reactive protein) test
  • Purpose: Measures the level of inflammation in the body.
  • Usage: High levels of CRP can indicate inflammation caused by joint problems.

2. Uric acid test

  • Purpose: Evaluates the level of uric acid in the blood.

Usage: High levels of uric acid can indicate arthritis, which can cause joint pain and swelling.

3. Rheumatoid Factor (RF) Test

  • Purpose: Rheumatoid factor detects the presence of antibodies.
  • Usage: Helps in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis.

4. Checking for calcium and vitamin D

  • Purpose: Measures the levels of calcium and vitamin D.
  • Usage: Deficiency of these nutrients can contribute to joint problems.

Additional Checks

  1. Autoimmunity Panel
  • Purpose: Evaluation for autoimmune disorders that may affect joints.
  • Usage: Useful for the diagnosis of conditions such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.

2. Kidney Function Test (KFT)

  • Purpose: Evaluates kidney function.
  • Usage: Swelling in the legs, including the knees and ankles, can be caused by kidney problems, leading to fluid retention.

Comprehensive diagnostic approach

Before starting any treatment, it is important to assess the full diagnosis. These include the following:

  • History: Collecting detailed information about the patient’s symptoms, medical history and lifestyle.
  • Physical examination: Conducting a comprehensive physical examination to assess swelling, pain and joint function.
  • Imaging Test: Using X-rays, MRIs and CT scans to visualize the structural and soft tissue components of the knee and knee.
  • Blood Tests: Blood tests to detect inflammation, uric acid levels and possible nutritional deficiencies.
  • Specific tests: To consider additional tests such as autoimmune panels and kidney function tests to rule out other possible causes of joint problems.
Holistic understanding

It is important to understand that knee and ankle problems may not always be local. Swelling and pain can be an indicator of systemic problems like kidney problems or poor blood circulation. Therefore, a holistic approach is necessary:

  • Identifying the root causes: It is very important to identify the underlying causes such as poor kidney function, blood flow problems or back problems, rather than just treating the symptoms.
  • Comprehensive Treatment Plan: Develop a treatment plan that addresses the root causes and promotes overall well-being.
