We have previously covered Parkinson’s disease and sciatica, both of which are also linked to neurological issues.   2. Memory Gland Impact: Alzheimer’s primarily affects the memory gland. Initially, patients may understand and respond well during their first consultation. However, during subsequent visits, they might not remember the doctor or the previous discussions. Stages and Counselling Approach: 

Understanding the stages of Alzheimer’s is crucial for effective treatment. The approach involves:

Alzheimer’s dementia is the most common form, accounting for about 80% of dementia cases. It is primarily caused by amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain. The hallmark symptom of Alzheimer’s is difficulty in remembering recent events. This is the most common problem associated with dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease. 

  1. Vascular Dementia:

Vascular dementia is caused by conditions that disrupt blood and oxygen flow to the brain. Our brain relies on oxygen and glucose from the blood. If the blood flow is inadequate, the brain’s oxygen levels drop, leading to decreased glucose consumption. This can cause brief memory lapses or giddiness. The symptoms of vascular dementia vary from person to person, making diagnosis challenging without specific tests, including blood and neurotransmitter tests. 

  1. Lewy Body Dementia:

Lewy body dementia is caused by the abnormal deposition of the protein alpha-synuclein, forming Lewy bodies. Proteins play a critical role in hormone production, and any imbalance can lead to dementia. Common symptoms include movement and balance problems, stiffness, trembling, daytime sleepiness, and hallucinations. Diagnosing Lewy body dementia can be challenging, especially when differentiating it from Parkinson’s disease. 

  1. Fronto temporal Dementia:

Frontotemporal dementia is associated with abnormal amounts of protein, such as TDP-43, in the brain. This type of dementia leads to changes in personality, behavior, and language skills. Mixed dementia is most commonly diagnosed in individuals over the age of 80. Parkinson’s disease, which we have discussed in detail, is another cause of dementia. It is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement and can lead to cognitive decline in later stages.

These disturbances affect neurotransmitter rhythms and protein secretion in the brain, leading to cognitive impairments. Sometimes, head injuries that initially seem minor can develop into serious problems over time, contributing to dementia.
